Trapeze
During the dog days of summer, the last place you want to find yourself is in the kitchen cooking. Our answer to your sweltering dilemma is to head into southern Howard County to Trapeze, a swank, contemporary seafood restaurant in the up and coming area of Fulton, called Maple Lawn. Trapeze is part of the restaurant group that includes Nottingham’s Tavern in Columbia and The Blue Stone Grill in Timonium.

I suggest you begin your evening with “Trappy Hour” and their discounted summer drinks and apps. No matter when you arrive, as you enter Trapeze you’ll be impressed with their soft lights, warm earth tone hues and their floor to ceiling wine display. As we were brought to our booth I couldn’t help but notice the open and spacious area throughout and the easy transition you make from lounge to bar to dining room. The low hanging lights at your table make for a very close and intimate atmosphere.

As you glance over their menu, you’ll appreciate their variety and different styles of cuisine. Beginning with their salad and apps you’ll love the difficult choice you’ll have in getting started. Their Blue Stone salad, borrowed from their sister Blue Stone Grill is a huge favorite. Brown sugared bacon strips with toasted pecans on a bed of greens in a sweet honey mustard vinaigrette makes for a mouth-watering start. The Spicy Shrimp in Garlic Sauce will tantalize you with its healthy wedge of crusted multi grain bread surrounded and topped with sautéed shrimp in a garlic white wine sauce. Now, let’s talk about the Fried Green Tomatoes Simply dynamite! The thinly sliced green tomatoes are deep fried and topped with a lemon butter sauce and beautifully finished with mounds of jumbo lump crabmeat. These are not your grandmother’s fried green tomatoes made with her lovingly flabby shake as she turns the skillet. They’re even better! Anyone with a short Italian Nonni knows just what I’m talking about.

As you move through their entrées you can go in just about any direction and be pleasantly sated. In addition to the regulars, check out the special fish of the day. I chose the Opah, which is revered by Hawaiian long line fishermen and brings good luck when presented to a friend. The preparation was a bed of perfectly cooked mushroom risotto with chunks of artichokes and sun-dried tomatoes, topped with a generous portion of Opah. Another beautiful diversion is their Crisfield Seafood Stew. This medley of steamed mussels, sautéed shrimp, scallops, and white fish with veggies in a fresh, light tomato broth will leave you with just enough room to finish one of their light desserts.

For the wine lovers, they have a generous selection, reasonably priced with bottles ranging from $25.00 to $50.00, as well as numerous wines by the glass. All in all, a fantastic dining experience! I would encourage everyone to spend an evening at Trapeze.
